Simon Foust

I am a Front-end developer specializing in responsive web design and css architecture.

DeviantArt

As a part of the Studio team, I work with our designers to build journals for the site and for our partners. We build these products with html/css and our own internal widgets.

Freelance

Many of my clients are designers or design firms. I also work with small local businesses and organizations in my area of Southern California. See the Projects section below for a list of some of the sites I've worked on.

SnapMD

SnapMD makes telemedicine software. I worked with the team on the css architecture of the project, reorganizing the initial sheet for use with the Less pre-processor. I also did front-end development and UI design.

DMusic

At DMusic I helped build an online community for musicians and enthusiasts. Many of the tools we built became staples of online communities, such as user-pages with journals, shareable playlists, and photo galleries.

The Deaf Society of NSW

November 2012 to May 2013

Client relationship: subcontracting with a web design/development studio.

Propeller Global is a Brisbane based studio and a strategic partner, and DSN is their client. So Propeller handled everything from client service to, graphic design and back-end development.

Propeller brought me on to help specifically with the tablet and mobile optimization of the website. The general target audience for the site relies heavily on accessibility and often uses mobile devices.

In line with the contraints of the project, we opted to customize a php script to detect user agents, categorize them as either mobile, tablet, or desktop, and then serve css and other assets specifically for those categories. My role was to help customize this php, and write the css for mobile and tablet.

Kravis Leadership Institute

Client relationship: long term retainer for website maintenance and consulting.

Kravis Leadership Institute is a research institute at Claremont Mckenna College.

KLI first hired me several years ago to integrate their website design with a content management system so that their staff and student interns could administer the content of their site.

I help with formatting their email newsletters that are sent to 200+ people, as well as with training student interns on how to administer the site and social media channels. The overall visual design and content strategy evolves throughout each year as well.

Sharp Designs

January 2016 to November 2016

Client relationship: small local business, hired me for site refresh and ecommerce integration.

Sharp Designs is an Embroidery and Direct-to-Garment printing business located just a few miles from me in Calimesa.

I was hired to solve two main problems. First, their site did not allow customers to place orders online, nor did it reach a quality of design that matched the excellent reputation of the client's business. Secondly, the Client was spending a lot of time educating customers and taking orders over the phone and in person.

Basically, I refreshed the brand and set the Client up with an ecommerce system that allows them to easily add and curate products. The first month the site was live to the public, they did over 3,000 in sales, which, for a company of its size, was very good.
